Matthew Stephenson
Matt Stephenson is a principal at Woods Bagot Architects with a prominent 15 year career that has featured the adaptive reuse of several structures. His expertise shines in transforming historic buildings into contemporary destinations, leveraging his design portfolio to create new spaces with a blend of historical respect and modern luxury. His passion for adaptive reuse and repositioning is evident within his portfolio, which includes significant projects such as Gramercy Square, 49 Chambers, and The Buchanan— all of which are exemplary models of adaptive reuse from their original status as historical urban structures.
Since joining Woods Bagot in 2010, Matt has been instrumental in pioneering the firm’s approach to adaptive reuse. His design is rooted in a belief in the dual benefits of adaptive reuse: preserving the character of historic buildings while championing sustainability. His work extends to nationally recognized discussions, such as the ‘Breathing New Life into Old Bones’ duologues hosted by the Urban Land Institute (ULI) and the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) where he has championed the economic and environmental benefits of revitalizing existing building structures
Matt holds degrees from the University of Cincinnati. He is a registered architect in New York and a LEED-accredited professional. His leadership and commitment to sustainable architecture continue to advance Woods Bagot’s mission, especially in projects that require innovative reimagining of existing spaces.
