Mang Sum ‘Mercy’ Sawyer, AIA, NCARB
Mang Sum ‘Mercy’ Sawyer, AIA, NCARB is the Director of Code and Zoning Interpretation at the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) where she leads a team of architects, engineers, and city planners in streamlining the processing and adjudication of Code and zoning determination requests, ensuring safe and compliant construction across NYC. Mercy played a pivotal role in developing the 2022 NYC Building Code, contributing her expertise to special projects, technical memos, Buildings Bulletins, and official determinations.
Before joining the City, Mercy spent over a decade in the private sector as a project architect, overseeing design and construction projects of various scales.
Originally from Hong Kong, Mercy moved to the United States and earned her B.A. in Architecture from UC Berkeley and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University.
