Number of NY architects is up, but firms still need more
Statewide architectural employment is growing quickly. Last year the number of licensed architects in New York reached 19,582, a 3.1% increase since 2017. The statistics come from a new report produced by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. The organization’s data also showed that the New York market is growing faster than the country as a whole. The number of licenses issued nationwide increased by 0.8%.
But despite the surge of new architects, work is so plentiful in the city that local firms are still struggling to bring in talent.
“It’s very competitive to hire new employees,” said Kirsten Sibilia, managing principal at Dattner Architects
(No. 19). “Although we all keep waiting for the cycle to turn, there’s been a lot of activity in terms of new projects in all different sectors. So most firms continue to need to hire.”
