Biden-Harris Administration Announces $1B for Electrified Federal Buildings
The General Services Administration (GSA) and the White House recently announced an investment of $975 million through the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) to make green building upgrades to federal buildings nationwide. The administration plans to roughly double the investment to $1.9 billion by drawing in additional private capital through energy savings performance contracts.
As a result, 28 federal buildings will become net zero energy buildings and 100 will be converted to all-electric buildings.
The IRA funding will cover about 40 million square feet, or about 20% of GSA’s buildings portfolio.
The Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center will be one of the 100 buildings to be electrified through this funding and a partnership with Johnson Controls. Plans for electrification include using 57,000 LED lights, 500 energy-efficient transformers and reverse osmosis groundwater recovery technology.
