Award of Merit Renovation/Restoration: Hall des Lumières

Award of Merit Renovation/Restoration: Hall des Lumières

With its Beaux-Arts design that includes a pioneering H-shaped plan that maximizes natural light, the landmark Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank building was ideal for being transformed into a 40,000-sq-ft public art center. Respecting the century-old building’s history, the team carefully restored interior limestone, marble and bronze elements; bank lobby teller windows; stained-glass windows; and sculptures. The coordination of vendors specializing in glass, metals, stone, plaster, stained glass and paint contributed to the preservation. The team navigated complex permitting and detailed restoration requirements to comply with regulations. Jobsite safety measures included a confined space plan and thorough training to address potential hazards. Effective communication with building management mitigated risks to other building tenants and their spaces, especially in condominium areas during crane picks for installation of a new cooling tower. Innovative techniques such as window removal with chain falls and temporary shoring were used for steel transportation and installation, further enhancing worker safety.
