Simon Shim - Active Design Group Engineering
Simon plays a principal engineer role at Active Design Group (ADG) Engineering based in Newark, NJ. His role includes initiating business development, running projects, enhancing the firm’s awareness, community engagement with the Korean War Veterans Association, and academy-industry collaboration enrichment.
Having practiced structural engineering over two decades, Simon became an industry-recognized structural engineer who has solved a wide range of challenging problems from historic building upgrades to high-rise residential, commercial, and mixed-use projects domestically and internationally. To lift the engineering society, he contributed as a co-panel for the Outrigger Design guidebook for high-rise Buildings, published by the Council of Tall Building and Urban Habitat.
Simon’s passion continues forward from engineering to education and social entrepreneurship and strives to address current problems and provide value-driven solutions in a built environment by asking the simple question WHY. He believes education is a key to current global challenges and the promotion of creative engineering thinking.
Since 2019 he has taught civil engineering design course at New Jersey Institute of Technology (www.ssttar.com) to nurture the beauty of structural engineering problem-solving thinking and creative motivation and has been contributing interdisciplinary connection as an engineering advisor to architectural students, and mechanical and civil engineering students for an intersectional collaboration project.
