Principal and Founder
Thomas Barry is the principal of OPerA Studio Architecture, founded in Brooklyn, NY in 2012. Prior to starting OPerA Studio, Thomas managed projects of multiple scales and building types with Office for Metropolitan Architecture, Davis Brody Bond, FX Fowle, and Archi-Tectonics. OPerA is focused on a performance based architectural design strategy wherein compositional systems are conceived to affect the ways in which spaces are used and operate. OPerA’s work also explores ways in which typological invention and can accommodate changing social and economic conditions as well as new patterns of use and increasing urban density.
Thomas’ work with OPerA has been augmented by his teaching experience at the New Jersey Institute of Technology, where he has run several advanced studios exploring housing and office building typologies and the extents to which those typologies can be reconsidered and re-invented.
OPerA Studio is currently designing projects of multiple scales and building types, including a new mixed use office and light manufacturing building in Brooklyn’s Gowanus, several multi-unit residential buildings, offices, retail, community spaces and single family residences.
