Vice President, Preconstruction, New York Region
Christopher Bailey is Vice President of Preconstruction for the New York region of Suffolk, a national-based company with a new vision for a Virtual Design in Construction (VDC)-driven approach in the Americas. His career represents nearly 40 years in the construction industry on a global platform with an insight into the technical side of construction, both in the field and the virtual environment. Over the past seven years, Mr. Bailey has been involved in the development of construction-based systems and processes to enhance the owner experience through the implementation of VDC practices from the earliest stages of preconstruction throughout the life-cycle of the project.
The adoption of the principle that VDC is at the core of certainty and predictability for owners, and that traditional construction processes, including estimating, scheduling and field coordination, need to be driven from this platform is essential to the advancement of delivery efficiency. In reality, despite the high profile of ‘BIM in Construction’ over the past five to ten years, only a few significant advancements have been made beyond the visualization, coordination and virtual reality environments that we see on a day-to-day basis. The real power lies within VDC, but requires a cultural shift to implement the step change that the industry needs to keep pace with its counterparts in parallel markets. As an industry, we need to embrace a significant process evolution to realize the vision that we continue to talk about but never fully adopt.
Mr. Bailey is a chartered quantity surveyor, project manager and Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS Americas), former Global QS Board Member and Construction Council Chair, 2011-2013. He also a member of several other industry bodies including ISPE, NIBS and AALAS, and has had several BIM-focused technical papers and articles published during the past five years.
